I wanted to share a heartfelt story about a special dog named Kaley, who touched our lives in profound ways and left an unfading mark on our hearts.
A few years ago, along the Bagmati corridor, I used to take my dogs for a walk every day. It was during these walks that we met Kaley, a one-year-old dark black and fluffy Bhote breed dog.
He was full of energy and quickly became a part of our daily routine. I would feed him, and whenever he saw me, he would eagerly join our dog walks. We had a spot where Kaley would stop, knowing it was time to return home.
Over time, he adapted to street life, and our meetings became a regular occurrence. Kaley was sweet and affectionate but fiercely protective of his territory.
He never hesitated to defend his area, even if it meant confronting other dogs. I vividly recall the day I found Kaley outside our house with a deep, 7 cm-long cuts from above his eyes to the back of his head.
It appeared someone had struck him with a sharp object. We were upset to see such cruel actions on voiceless animals.
He was in pain and clearly needed help. Despite never crossing our usual boundary, that day he did, hoping we could assist him.
It was a deeply emotional moment for me to witness his loyalty and determination as he walked 3 km to our home, a place he had never seen before but recognized as a safe place.
We immediately called the vet and provided Kaley with the care he needed. From that day onward, he never left our side and considered our alley his home.
Kaley became our protector, watching over our home, other dogs, and cats in the neighborhood. He viewed us as his pack and proudly assumed the role of leader.
Kaley lived life on his terms, enjoying the freedom to roam both indoors and outdoors. He spent 12 wonderful years with us, surrounded by love and care.
Reflecting on Kaley’s life fills me with emotion. He dedicated himself to us because of the small act of kindness we showed him, which feels insignificant compared to the sacrifice and love he gave to us.
Whenever we remember Kaley, we think of him as strong, brave, and a natural leader. His story is a poignant reminder of the unconditional love dogs offer and how they give their entire lives in exchange for our care.
See you in the next story.
