A Tale Overcoming Superstition

Have you ever heard the superstitious saying, “A black cat is a sign of bad luck”? I’m pretty sure you have.
Today, I want to share a story that highlights the joy and love a black cat can bring, regardless of superstitious beliefs.
On October 14, 2015, I was shopping with my mom near Banglamukhi when I saw something very unusual on the road.
At first, I thought it was just a piece of black plastic with some garbage in it.
But as I got closer, I realized it was a tiny black kitten, all alone and looking very sick.
We didn’t know much about cats since we had dogs at home, but we couldn’t leave the poor thing there.

Our community can be quite superstitious, and many people believe black cats bring misfortune and bad luck.

Some people even go out of their way to chase and hurt them, seeing them as signs of bad luck.

It’s common for people to wait for someone else to cross the road if a black cat happens to walk in front of them.

But we didn’t care about any of that. We just saw a little creature in desperate need of help.

We were worried because there were lots of dogs around, and we didn’t want them to hurt the kitten.

Even though people say black cats are unlucky, we saw a little life that needed saving.

We decided to bring the kitten home with us. He smelled bad and had hurt paws, but we knew we had to help him.

We gently placed him in a shopping bag, with his tiny head peeking out, and walked all the way home.

At home, we already had seven rescued dogs, and we weren’t sure how they would react to the new addition of kitten.

People often say dogs and cats can’t be friends, but we were hopeful that they would get along.

I kept the kitten in my room and introduced him to the dogs slowly. To our surprise and delight, they accepted him and soon became good friends.

We named the kitten Baagru, which means tiger in Nepali.

Despite his rough start, Baagru slowly started showing progress and healed completely with time.

Baagru quickly became a cherished member of our family. His playful nature and big, expressive eyes brought immense joy into our lives.

On November 19, 2023, Baagru passed away peacefully at home from old age. It was heartbreaking to say goodbye, but we felt incredibly lucky to have had him in our lives.

Baagru’s story didn’t end with his passing. Instead inspired by our experience with him, we started rescuing and adopting more cats. Each cat we save reminds us of Baagru, and his memory lives on through the love we continue to share with other animals in need.

This experience taught us a valuable lesson: compassion and kindness can surpass superstitions and prejudices. It’s easy to dismiss or ignore those in need, especially when societal beliefs threat our judgment.

But by looking beyond these misconceptions, we can make a significant difference in the lives of innocent creatures.

Regardless of superstitions or misconceptions, together we can create a cycle of positive change in our community.
